Rule 980 says
Voir dire can’t be recorded.
Laptops are suspect.

Rule 980 of California Rules of Court forbid recording jury selection for trials in the state’s courts. When Simpson trial judge Lance Ito allowed a closed audio feed of jury selection to another room in the courthouse where members of the media could listen and take notes, he learned that some laptop computers, which were relative new technology, could record sound, he banned them. Not just laptops that could record sound, but all laptops. The reason? Ito couldn’t be reasonably assured that those that supposedly couldn’t do so actually couldn’t.
