When I saw the headline O.J. Simpson museum turns morbid merchandise into art today, my first thought was I could guarantee no exhibit in that ‘pop-up’ museum could be as morbid as a souvenir tucked away in a closet in my house. It came my way as a gift that would have been way too awkward to refuse. So it’s been out of sight and mostly out of mind ever since.
I dug it out not long ago when I read about plans for the Simpson quickie museum with the idea of taking a picture and posting it on this blog. I just couldn’t do it, though, and stowed it back away.
“The museum includes hundreds of weird, quirky and at times, disturbing paraphernalia designed to make visitors think about just how far people went to monetize the worldwide fascination with the case,” the article pointed out. The museum “is trying to show just how low society sank in its fascination with O.J. Simpson’s murder trial — and the writing’s on the wall.”
It certainly shows how poor taste can disguise itself as humor and become normalized and accepted by society.
Okay, so I have to know what the item is that’s tucked away in your closet. I’m fairly new to your blog, so forgive me for asking about this item if you’ve spoken in the past about it in past blogs.
First, Jennifer, thank you for following my blog. No, I hadn’t mentioned this item before. In fact, I don’t think even the members of my family know about it.
Since I’ve now mentioned it, though, I suppose it’s only fair to answer your question. Without going into detail, it’s a machete with disturbingly gruesome scenes etched on the blade and tooled into the leather sheath.
Thanks again for subscribing to this blog. I am interested in knowing, if you don’t mind saying, what your interest is in doing so.
Saturday night, September 30, at 8 pn CT, CBS 48 Hours has (another) show on the Simpson trial.
I don’t understand it. Did you watch the show? Was it any different or did you see/hear anything new?
Oops. I see that it hasn’t aired yet. It’s tomorrow night. Thanks for letting me know. Do you plan to watch it?
Yes, I’m recording it on my DVR. I’ll watch it the next day.
Please let me know what you think.
